WTIP Has A Home Of Its Own!

After 10 years of broadcasting, WTIP North Shore Community Radio has moved to its own building on the west end of Grand Marais. Since first going on the air in April, 1998, WTIP has operated out of rented space spread out in the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.

Now, as it begins its 10th year on the air, WTIP has moved in to a home of its own to ensure that it can continue to provide local broadcasting services for the North Shore.

The new building improves WTIP's ability to provide:

A Reliable Signal WTIP is the official source of NOAA Alerts and is the county's only outlet for prompt distribution of in-depth public safety and potentially life-saving information. The new building provides more space for news preparation and production. In addition, there is room to install back-up power equipment so that the signal is protected from local power outages during emergencies.

More Programming. WTIP is actively working to increase its independence by providing expanded production facilities for the growing number of volunteer programmers. These active participants ensure that WTIP's programming reflects the diverse interests and informational needs of our community.

More Community Outreach. The residents and visitors to Minnesota's most remote county have found WTIP plays a vital role in the community. For example, current program schedules include health call-in forums, interviews with local, state and federal government officials, a daily events calendar, and local emergency announcements. The new facilities permit the station to accelerate its role as "community connector."

WTIP purchased the building last fall and began renovations to turn the building into a functional radio station early this year. On Friday, May 30, the final broadcast from the former studios was the eclectic music program Sidetracks. Over the weekend, the WTIP programming was broadcast out of a temporary studio, and on Sunday, June 2nd, WTIP programming was live from the new studios. The move was completed without any interruption in service.

Now operating out of a home of its own, WTIP is looking ahead to the next decade and working to continue to meet the needs of its listeners and expand its community services.
